Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede | Midway Model Session

August 30, 2018

Every photographer has a bucket list, and I’m sure that I am not alone in wanting to have a fun carnival/fair session on mine! Of course you see all the fun photos on social media, but for me this session meant something more.

Ah the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede – one of my favourite family traditions. Now I know that it’s the same thing every year and it’s definitely not as spectacular as the Calgary Stampede, but it holds a special place in my heart. Stampede week is a week that I get to spend with my family who hasn’t missed a day since probably before I was born. Every year we check out the shops, the petting zoo, the midway rides and of course the rodeo. And every night ends with watching the fireworks of course, which is my mom’s favourite thing in the whole world. Traditions like these are so special to me, and I hope they never change.

So naturally because the Medicine Hat Stampede holds special memories for me growing up, I just had to do a session there. Shiann was the perfect choice for a model because she knows exactly what to do, and made it super easy for me while I navigated the tricky midway lighting and dodged as many people as I could. It’s certainly not easy working around crowds, but there are a few spots where you can definitely get a good angle and make it look like you’re the only ones there! I enjoy a fun challenge, and now that I’ve experienced it I can’t wait until next year to shoot here again, hopefully with a fun-loving couple! We did manage to convince Shiann’s boyfriend to get in on a few shots at the end which turned out to be so adorable!

Take a look and comment below telling me which part of the stampede is your favourite! Mine is the food of course, and I have a funny feeling that most of you will agree!
